alcis three part series titled early beginnings draws to a close and firmly cements the young swiss producer as a house music star in the making. alcis first ever demo was sent to phil weeks at the start of 2013, and so impressed was the robsoul chief that he instantly signed all 10 tracks to the label. alci, robsoul and phil weeks are an ideal match, as this third installment shows once again, with his funky, looped, sample-based and heads-down jacking house beats aligning perfectly with both phils and the labels philosophy and output. its also clear to hear the influence of the classic french house sound & robsouls interpretation of it in alcis music. the first two volumes in the early beginnings series picked up support from mosca (radio 1 play), darren emerson, roberto rodriguez, round table knights, matthias vogt, dirty channels, catz n dogz, rolando, hot toddy and many more

borai returns to helm tasteful nudes’ third release, *last time out*, demonstrating his techno chops in two different ways. the title track is all techno muscle, banging out a gigantic piano riff to match the slamming percussion and hypnotic undercurrents. *midnight run* imagines a race through a pitch black city, layering stark pads and sparkling riffs atop its gas-guzzling bass line. both whip the dance floor into shape.

in the 70s radio stations were a powerful force across the whole of the us, and anyone with a transistor radio had access all kinds of music. live music was another matter altogether, and unless you found yourself in a major city your nights out were limited to what the local talent had to offer. this was especially so with soul and funk acts, as mainstream rock and pop was where the money was. so for small time oklahoma soul bands such as husband and wife charles and barbara burtons groups messengers inc - and later burton inc - times were tough. however, like many purveyors of soul, tough times were no match for those with determination, persistence and a story to tell. many artists scraped enough money together to make a 45 or two on their own label, but the burtons took this to another level – they got themselves organised and released their own full length lps.

memento and french producer/dj okain are by all means a perfect match: the parisian artist is well known for his refusal to conform to mainstream club trends and for his personal and eclectic take on contemporary house and techno, while the italian label run by idriss d caters to the needs of the most sophisticated and well-read electronic music fans. both stand out as true purveyors of unique styles and great taste, and this release is no exception.

the deeply layered rhythms and atmospheric elements that refracted shows across the four tracks on along a ghostly trail make a perfect match for silent season, as the berlin based newcomer joining some illustrious company in the shape of stl, djorvin clain and edanticonf in contributing to the canadian labels rise. clouds of sub bass meld rhythmically with the stripped back percussive lilts of enlightenment as they traverse a scenic back drop of textural atmospherics, whilst the title track is similar in tone if imbued with a spectral feeling that justifies the name. contrasting this, both oo-koo-he and hyperdimension are gloopy bassline lead arrangements that slowly swell around the senses.

adam beyers original track starts with a heavy bass line that is a sure-fire, grooved out killer. the infectious vocal hook and melody line supplies the extra force to make this track one of the strongest releases on truesoul to this date. nic fanciullis take on take me away uses a rhythmic melodic synth-line before bringing in the vocal to maximum effect. alans darker approach gives this release an extra dimension, using deep-pounding toms to create a cool, stripped back vibe with warm stabs and hats to match.

breakbeat paradise recordings is proud to introduce yet another talented artist to the bbp crew. dj rudd is an established dj and producer from latvia, where he is leading the funky breaks/mashup scene, doing shows with names like a-skillz, featurecast, nightmare on wax to name a few. rudds oldskool type of funky breaks was a perfect match for bpp, who was quick to get rudd on board, when they first heard rudds successful funky breakout ep on bigm records. this became the beginning of a prosperous teamwork set out to design this amazing ep of 4 state-of-the-art funky bangers. track by track and sample by sample they worked their way through, in order for this ep to be as great as possible. the result is nothing less than a masterpiece of classic funky breaks - with all the right elements including well-balanced use of modern day wobble basslines.

the next ep on germany s hello? repeat imprint comes from seuil, one of paris s most inspired underground producers. in terms of style, it is a match that could hardly be more perfect. hello? repeat has spent the past six years carving a niche for itself with eps from cabanne, audio werner and label co-founder daze maxim, plus acclaimed albums by bruno pronsato and kate simko. seuil, meanwhile, has put out a steady stream of ultra-deep 12-inches on labels like freak n chic and sammy dees ultrastretch. both specialize in a sound that is modern, understated and hypnotic. late call is exactly what its name suggests: a record made for the deepest, most tender portion of the night. the drums are slick and punchy, but the rest is woozy and romantic–this is one to put on when the crowd has stopped chatting and everyone s dancing with their eyes closed. topping it off is a vocal line made famous by diana ross but recited here by an androgynous diva: if you need me, call me, no matter where you are, no matter how far… dark, trippy and weirdly moving, this is one of seuil s finest tracks yet. >slow motion< strikes a similar chord but with a more subtle approach. here you notice seuil s rare touch for subtlety: in the absence of any real >hook<, he keeps the track moving with expertly sculpted drums, a warm half-melody and a gently propulsive beat. soft chords sustain in the background to create a balmy summer night feel. both tracks show seuil and hello? repeat doing what they do best: delivering something deep, functional and full of character.

rather lightweight live album, only thirty four minutes long, three songs and some painful applause herding for an encore. the line-up is essentially the girls line-up, though john g. perry s been replaced by an also-excellent mike wedgwood. the production is clear but the mix misjudged: the admittedly nicely brought out bass sound dwarfs all other elements. in particular, pye hastings guitar is very low, the drums never seem to match the bass volume.

originally set up as an outlet for his own work as well as that of his close friends, eatbrain is now set to become one of neurofunk s most daring labels. with its first release featuring jade & state of mind s here we go and audio hypnosis from jade himself on the flip, this budding label has forced people to take notice from the very beginning.
the venom remix ep follows things up in a big way and can be seen as a statement of intent, with four tracks from jade s very own venom lp getting high profile remixes from some of the neurofunk scene s most prestigious names. with a back catalogue already boasting jade, black sun empire, fourward and mindscape among others by only its third release, eatbrain is a label with big plans - and big sounds to match.

after their huge success in 2009 and 2010 one can truly say kaiserdisco are now one of the contemporary stars in the techno universe. rather than trying to match expectations the duo from hamburg followed their instincts and have again chucked out music that will place them in top positions. they dedicated this record to the people in lima, peru. their new tune lurin is a bomb of a groove track with a stunning diversity of different samples and sounds including hip ethno samples and all it takes to make it a hi-tech kaiserdisco product come alive.
